Liam Millar scored with less than 10 minutes remaining, as Hull City edged out Coventry City 1-0 in a battle of newly promoted teams in Saturday’s Premier League clash.

Nigeria internationals Semi Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi were in action for Hull and Coventry respectively. Both players played for 90 minutes.

Awoniyi’s Nigerian teammate Frank Onyeka did not feature due to a knock.

Ajayi scored Hull’s first goal of the league campaign, after breaking the deadlock in the shock 2-0 win against Manchester United in their opening fixture.

The team most had pegged for relegation before the season now have two wins from two with a smash-and-grab at Coventry Building Society Arena.

Coventry suffered a 3-0 defeat at champions Arsenal in their opener, and would have gone into the clash with Hull desperate to make the most of a big opportunity to get off the mark.

But, for all the possession, the Sky Blues struggled to create opportunities to do so.

Awoniyi had Coventry’s best chance as he failed to make proper contact on a deflected Loum Tchaouna cross in the first half, with his effort clawed away by Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Yet the better chances came from Hull, with Nobel Mendy drawing a fine save from Carl Rushworth with a 30-yard half-volley and Millar wasting a clear opening when he dragged an effort wide after going past two defenders.

But he made up for that miss eight minutes from the end of normal time as Coventry were caught on the counter, Millar slotting home after being played in by Mohamed Belloumi to send Hull second in the Premier League table after two games.

In the other 3pm fixture at the Vitality Stadium, a James Tarkowsky stoppage time goal, saw Everton force a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.
